How to eliminate shore flies from the home?
The key to eliminating shore flies is removing standing water, their larvae live in water. If standing water remains for more than 3 days, larvae can develop from eggs to adults. Without standing water, they cannot breed.
Remove standing water (fundamental)
- Empty pot trays after watering, clean up within 5 minutes of watering.
- Wipe up floor water thoroughly with a cloth or mop.
- Keep drains clear and free-flowing; clear any blockages promptly.
- Wipe dry around floor drain edges and sink perimeters.
- Reduce water film on walls and floors; wipe down shower walls after bathing.
Spray insecticide (auxiliary)
- Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide around standing water points and on walls (residual effect 2-4 weeks).
- Focus on floor drain edges and around drainpipes; reapply weekly.
- Adults that contact the dried film die within 24 hours.
- Larvae are naturally eliminated with the removal of standing water; no targeted larvicide is needed.
Keep dry (prevent recurrence)
- Turn on exhaust fans immediately after showering and run for at least 30 minutes.
- Wipe up floor water within 3 minutes of showering.
- Empty pot trays immediately after watering.
- Keep areas around kitchen sinks dry; wipe countertops dry before bed.
- Maintain these measures for 1-2 weeks, and shore flies will disappear completely.
Effectiveness
Shore fly control works quickly, remove standing water, larvae die; spray insecticide, adults die. The key is maintaining dryness without relapse.
