Can You Still Use Herbs After Beetle Infestation?
Can You Still Use Medicinal Herbs After Drugstore Beetle Infestation?
Whether drugstore beetle-infested herbs can still be used depends on the severity of the infestation and the type of herb. Here are some judgment criteria and handling methods:
Light Infestation (Can Be Used)
If the following conditions are met, the herbs can still be used after treatment:
- The infestation is limited in scope; only a few scattered worm-holes
- The herb's overall structure is intact; no large amounts of powder
- No off odor; color is basically normal
- No mold or spoilage
Treatment method:
- Thoroughly cut away the infested portions — cut a bit extra into the surrounding clean-looking area as well
- Sun-dry for 4–6 hours to use high heat to kill any remaining eggs and larvae
- Or steam over boiling water for 10–15 minutes (suitable for flower and leaf herbs) to thoroughly kill insects
- Store the treated herbs separately in an airtight container and use them up quickly
Moderate Infestation (Recommended to Discard)
If the following apply, it's better to let them go:
- Large amounts of powder and droppings inside the herb
- Multiple tunnels visible when you break it open
- The smell has changed — off odor or sour smell
- Multiple worm-holes on the surface
Heavy Infestation (Must Discard)
If any of these apply, the herb has essentially lost all medicinal value and cannot be used:
- The interior has been reduced to powder
- Accompanied by mold, discoloration, or rot
- Clear foul or sour-rotten smell
- The infestation has lasted so long that active compounds have mostly degraded
Special Notes
- For valuable herbs (ginseng, cordyceps, deer antler, etc.), even if lightly infested, it's wise to consult a professional before deciding whether to use them
- Insect-infested herbs are more prone to molding, and mycotoxins (such as aflatoxins) are harmful to human health
- Even after treatment, the herb's potency will be reduced. When in doubt, repurchasing is the safer option
- Check herb storage regularly and isolate any infested items immediately
