Firebrats vs. Silverfish: What's the Difference?
Firebrats and Silverfish are the two species in the order Zygentoma that commonly infest homes. To the untrained eye they look identical — carrot-shaped, scaly, with three tail appendages. But they occupy completely different habitats, and misidentifying which one you have leads to targeting the wrong control strategy.
### Visual Differences
| Feature | Firebrats (*Thermobia domestica*) | Silverfish (*Lepisma saccharinum*) |
|---------|-----------------------------------|-------------------------------------|
| Color | Mottled gray-brown with dark patches | Uniform silvery metallic, sometimes with golden sheen |
| Body length | 8–12 mm | 12–19 mm (generally larger) |
| Scale pattern | Irregular brown patches on lighter background | Uniform silver scales reflecting light |
| Antennae | Long, thick, visible | Long, thinner |
| Tail appendages | Two cerci + one central epiproct, all similar length | Two cerci + one longer central epiproct |
### Habitat Differences (The Most Important Distinction)
Firebrats:
- Found in hot areas: near boilers, furnace rooms, behind ovens, around hot-water pipes, summer attics.
- Preferred temperature: 32–41°C (90–106°F).
- Actively seek heat — they orient toward warm surfaces and avoid cool areas.
Silverfish:
- Found in cool, damp areas: bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, under sinks, in damp books.
- Preferred temperature: 21–28°C (70–82°F).
- Actively seek moisture — they orient toward humid surfaces and avoid dry areas.
### Why Misidentification Leads to Failed Control
If you think you have Silverfish but actually have Firebrats:
- You target bathrooms and damp areas (wrong habitat). Firebrats are in the furnace room and behind the oven (correct habitat). Your treatments miss the infestation entirely.
If you think you have Firebrats but actually have Silverfish:
- You target the furnace room and hot pipes (wrong habitat). Silverfish are in the bathroom and basement (correct habitat). Same result — treatments miss the target.
### Control Strategies Tailored to Each Species
For Firebrats: Reduce heat + humidity in furnace rooms and around hot pipes. Insulate pipes. Improve ventilation. Apply DE near heat sources.
For Silverfish: Reduce humidity in bathrooms, basements, and damp areas. Run dehumidifier. Fix leaks. Apply DE near moisture sources. Store books in dry, sealed bins.
### Both Species Damage the Same Materials
Despite different habitats, both eat the same carbohydrate-rich materials:
- Paper, books, wallpaper, and wallpaper paste.
- Starch in clothing, curtains, and upholstery.
- Glue in book bindings and envelopes.
- Dead insects and organic debris.
- Some stored dry foods.
The damage pattern is identical — irregular feeding holes, notched edges on paper, yellow stains from feces, and shed scales.
### When Both Species Are Present
Some homes (especially older houses with both damp basements and boiler rooms) harbor both species simultaneously. In this case:
- Treat both habitats simultaneously — dehumidify damp areas AND insulate/ventilate hot areas.
- Place sticky traps in both cool/damp zones and hot/dry zones.
- Apply DE along baseboards in all affected rooms.
