Bean Weevils Control & Removal Guide
(Cowpea weevil, Seed beetle, Pulse beetle)*Callosobruchus chinensis* / Bruchidae
How They Get In
- Bulk legumes carry eggs on bean surfaces.
- Unsealed containers allow adult weevils to fly in.
- Old storage containers harbor residual eggs.
- Weevils from stores and warehouses come home with packaging.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Pre-Treatment: Sort infested beans, discard or freeze at -18 C for 48 hours. Transfer sound beans to sealed containers.;
- Key Zones: Cabinet shelf joints, drawer corners, wall corners.;
- Application: Spray cabinet joints in lines. Never on beans.;
- Post-Treatment: Close 1-2 hours, ventilate. Freeze new beans before storage.;
- Prevention: Seal all legumes, buy small quantities, keep new and old separate, inspect monthly.
Prevention & Follow-Up
Buy beans in small amounts and restock more often to shorten storage time. Transfer all beans into sealed glass jars or airtight plastic containers after purchase. Store new beans and old beans in separate containers to prevent cross-infestation. Check your beans regularly — if you see round exit holes on the surface or signs of tunneling inside, freeze the beans right away. Freeze newly bought beans at 0°F (-18°C) for 48 hours to kill any eggs before storing them.
