House Mosquitoes Control & Removal Guide
(Common mosquito, Culex, West Nile vector)*Culex pipiens pallens* / *C. quinquefasciatus*
How They Get In
- Door/window gaps: damaged screens or unclosed windows allow direct entry.
- Follow-through: entering during the brief moment doors open.
- Yard breeding: standing water in flower pot trays, buckets, discarded tires, and clogged gutters around the home provide egg-laying sites.
- Basements and garages: cool, damp daytime resting sites.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Eliminate Breeding Water (most fundamental measure): Weekly yard inspection — remove all standing water containers: discarded tires, flower pot trays, buckets, children's toys, bird baths. Keep gutters and drain pipes flowing freely. Stock ponds and water features with mosquito fish (e.g., guppies).;
- Physical Barriers: Install intact screens (mesh 1.2mm or less) on all windows and doors; inspect and repair holes. Use bed nets or mosquito traps in bedrooms. Minimize window opening at dusk and night; close doors promptly.;
- Indoor Residual Spraying: Spray walls, ceiling corners, and behind curtains where mosquitoes rest during the day with pyrethroid-based insecticides. Use electric mosquito repellent mats or liquid vaporizers in enclosed rooms.;
- Personal Protection: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing when outdoors from dusk to dawn. Apply repellent containing DEET or picaridin to exposed skin. Burn mosquito coils or use fans on patios — Culex are weak fliers and fans effectively block their approach.;
- Long-Term Management: For large water bodies that cannot be drained (ponds, waterlogged low areas), apply Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) biological larvicide — highly effective against mosquito larvae and safe for fish and humans. For community-wide high mosquito density, coordinate with local health authorities for area-wide control.
Prevention & Follow-Up
Check your yard weekly and dump out any standing water. Install tight-fitting insect screens on all windows and doors. Keep windows closed at dusk, and use bed nets and electric mosquito repellents. For larger water features in the yard, apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to kill mosquito larvae.
