Cockroaches Control & Removal Guide
(German cockroach, American cockroach, Palmetto bug)*Blattella germanica* / *Periplaneta americana*
How They Get In
- Grocery Bags and Packaging: Cockroaches and their egg cases easily hitchhike into homes inside grocery bags, cardboard boxes, and food packaging — especially from warehouses and stores.;
- Utility Pathways: In apartments and multi-unit buildings, cockroaches travel through wall voids, plumbing chases, electrical conduits, and shared ventilation ducts between units.;
- Drains and Sewers: American cockroaches, in particular, enter homes through floor drains, sewer connections, and dry P-traps in basements and ground-floor bathrooms.;
- Outdoor Migration: During extreme weather — heavy rain, drought, or cold snaps — outdoor cockroach populations move indoors seeking shelter and moisture.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Pre-Treatment Sanitation: Cockroach control starts with eliminating food, water, and harborage. Clean all kitchen surfaces, remove grease buildup, fix leaking pipes and faucets, and store all food in sealed containers. Take out trash nightly. Declutter — piles of paper, cardboard, and clutter provide ideal cockroach harborage. Vacuum cracks and crevices to remove debris and egg cases. Empty and clean under-sink cabinets.;
- Key Treatment Zones: Under and behind refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and microwaves. Inside kitchen and bathroom cabinet voids — especially the corners and shelf brackets. Behind and under the sink, around plumbing penetrations. Baseboard-wall junctions throughout the kitchen and bathroom. Inside electrical outlet and switch boxes. Around trash and recycling areas.;
- Application Method: For crack-and-crevice treatment, inject the spray directly into gaps, seams, and voids using the nozzle. For surface treatment, apply a thin, even band along baseboards, cabinet edges, and appliance perimeters. Pay special attention to warm, dark, moist areas. Do not oversaturate. Allow to dry completely.;
- Post-Treatment: Keep treated areas dry for 24 hours — do not mop or wipe. Place bait gels in areas where cockroaches are seen traveling. Bait stations complement spray treatments: cockroaches feed on the bait and carry the active ingredient back to the nest, killing other colony members through secondary transfer (coprophagy and necrophagy).;
- Repeat Treatment: Cockroach oothecae are highly resistant to the spray. Nymphs hatching after the initial treatment will not have contacted the residue. Repeat treatment at 7-10 day intervals for 2-3 cycles to get rid of each new generation. The German cockroach's reproductive rate means persistence is essential — a single missed ootheca can restart the infestation.
Prevention & Follow-Up
Keep kitchen counters and floors free of food debris and grease. Store all food in airtight containers. Fix leaky pipes and faucets — cockroaches need water. Seal cracks in walls, cabinets, and around pipes. Take out trash daily. Use gel baits in hidden areas for ongoing control.
