How to prevent stink bugs from laying eggs on drying clothes?
Stink bugs sometimes lay eggs on drying clothes, especially brightly colored ones. They leave rows of neat, round eggs on the fabric, and after hatching, frass is left behind — quite troublesome.
Preventive measures
- Inspect before bringing in — shake clothes before taking them in and check inside and out for eggs or adults, especially in folds like collars, cuffs, and underarms.
- Avoid overnight drying — dusk is peak stink bug activity; do not leave clothes drying outside overnight; bring them in before dark.
- Balcony insect netting — for lower floors, install fine insect-proof netting around the drying rack.
- Spray drying rack — spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on the ends of the drying pole, balcony window frames, and mounting brackets. Stink bugs that crawl over treated surfaces die.
- Prompt storage — take clothes in as soon as they are dry; do not leave them hanging outside for long periods to reduce exposure.
What if eggs are found?
- Do not touch them directly with your hands; remove them with a tissue.
- Alternatively, remove eggs with tape and discard.
- Wash clothes in water above 60°C.
- Stink bug eggs hatch in 7-14 days; remove them promptly to prevent nymphs from spreading.
- Stink bug eggs do not pose a health risk, but it is better to remove them for peace of mind.
Balcony drying tips
Autumn is the peak season for stink bugs entering homes to overwinter. It is advisable to dry clothes indoors during this period. If outdoor drying is necessary, do so at midday, avoiding the active early morning and dusk hours.
