The small red-eyed flies near the garbage bin are fruit flies, also called vinegar flies. They are one of the most common small flies in kitchens.
Characteristics of fruit flies
Fruit flies are very small (2-4 mm), pale yellowish-brown or brownish-yellow in color. Their most distinctive feature is a pair of bright red compound eyes — this is the most obvious difference from phorid flies. They are not as robust as house flies and appear more slender. They do not fly fast, often circling, and quickly gather on rotten fruit.
Why are there so many near the garbage bin?
Fruit flies have an extremely keen sense of smell for fermented and rotting odors, especially:
- Overripe fruit (banana peels, apple cores, grapes, etc.)
- Leftover drink bottles (juice, cola, beer, etc.)
- Vegetable peels and other kitchen waste.
- Residual liquid on vinegar and wine bottles.
The alcohol and acetic acid odors produced when sugar in these foods is broken down by yeast are "dinner bell" signals for fruit flies. So garbage bins, fruit bowls, and drink bottles are their favorite gathering spots.
Fruit flies don't just fly in from outside — they breed in the house!
Many people mistakenly think fruit flies come in from outside, but in fact, the vast majority breed indoors. A female fruit fly can lay hundreds of eggs on the surface of rotting fruit. At about 25°C, eggs hatch in only 8-12 hours, and a generation is completed in about 10 days. This is why fruit flies can multiply rapidly into an infestation in the kitchen.
How to deal with them
- Dispose of overripe or rotting fruit (eat, refrigerate, or discard).
- Keep garbage bins covered; dispose of kitchen waste promptly.
- Rinse and discard empty drink and wine bottles promptly.
- Use fruit fly traps (or homemade with vinegar + dish soap) to trap adults.
- Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide around garbage bins as a residual treatment.
