Why do rice weevils keep coming back?

Why do rice weevils keep coming back?

The fundamental reason is that you only killed the visible adults, but eggs and larvae inside the rice grains remain alive. Rice weevil eggs are laid inside the grain, invisible to the naked eye, and cannot be killed by ordinary sifting or rinsing.

Reason 1: Eggs hidden inside grains

Female rice weevils use their long snouts to bore a small hole in the grain, deposit an egg inside, and seal the hole with a secretion. These infested grains look identical to normal grains. By the time you notice weevils, several generations have already bred.

Reason 2: Incomplete freezing

Many people store rice in the refrigerator (around 4°C), but weevils only become less active at this temperature—they do not die. To kill eggs and larvae, the rice must be placed in the freezer (-18°C or below) for at least 48 hours.

Reason 3: Other sources in the kitchen

Even if you treated that bag of rice, other foods in the kitchen may also be infested:

  • Noodles, flour, other grains may harbor weevils.
  • Debris in cabinet crevices can sustain small populations.
  • Weevils from neighboring homes may fly in through windows.

Reason 4: Only adults were removed

After picking out visible weevils and discarding them, eggs and larvae inside the grain continue to develop. A new generation emerges in a week or two, making it seem like they have returned.

How to truly eliminate them?

  1. Inspect all grains and find all sources.
  2. Freeze any that can be frozen for at least 48 hours.
  3. Completely empty and vacuum cabinets; clean all crevices.
  4. Store grains in airtight containers.
  5. Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth in cabinet corners as a protective measure.
