How to prevent chigger mites?

Prevention of chigger mites focuses on personal protection during outdoor activities and yard environmental management, as they mainly live in grassy areas outdoors. Chigger larvae are extremely small (0.2-0.5 mm) and nearly invisible to the naked eye. Their bites cause intense itching and may transmit scrub typhus.

Outdoor activity protection

  • Avoid sitting or lying on grass in areas with tall vegetation. Wear long sleeves and pants, and tuck pants into socks.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, as it makes small insects easier to spot.
  • Apply DEET-based repellents to pants and socks.
  • Stay on the center of trails; avoid brushing against tall grass on the sides.

Post-return measures

  • Shower and change clothes promptly upon returning home. Do not leave dirty clothes on the floor; put them directly into the washing machine.
  • Wash outdoor clothing in hot water and tumble dry on high heat.
  • Check your body carefully for red spots or eschars, especially in armpits, waist, groin, and other areas.

Yard environmental management

  • Mow grass around the house regularly to keep it below 5 cm.
  • Remove leaf litter and weed piles from yard edges.
  • Control rats and mice, as they are primary hosts for chiggers.
  • In outdoor activity areas (lawns, seating areas), you may apply permethrin-containing household insecticide to reduce the number of ground-dwelling chiggers.

By following these preventive measures, you can greatly reduce the risk of chigger bites.
