How to eliminate phorid flies?
The key to eliminating phorid flies is to find and remove the breeding source — spraying without removing the source will only result in more flies emerging from the decaying matter.
Step 1: Find and remove the source
Phorid fly larvae grow in decaying organic matter; the breeding site must be eliminated:
- Start with garbage bins — dispose of kitchen waste daily; wash and dry the inside of the bin.
- Check the kitchen sink drain — grease and food residue buildup in pipes is the most common breeding source; disassemble the trap and clean it, or pour boiling water down the drain.
- Also check floor drains and drain openings; scrub off the slime.
- Damp mops and cloths are easily overlooked breeding sites — wring them out and hang them up after use.
Step 2: Spray insecticide
After removing the breeding source, spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide to kill remaining adults:
- Focus on areas near garbage bins, sinks, and around drainpipes.
- Also spray walls and countertops where phorid flies frequently land.
- Once dry, the insecticide forms an invisible film; phorid flies that crawl over or land on it die. Residual effect lasts 2-4 weeks.
Step 3: Daily prevention
- Use garbage bins with lids; do not leave kitchen waste overnight.
- Clean sink strainers daily; do not wash food debris down the drain.
- Flush drains with boiling water weekly to prevent debris buildup.
- Wring out mops and cloths and hang them to dry.
Effectiveness
Removing the source combined with environmental spraying usually brings the situation under control within a few days. Spraying alone without source removal will not solve the problem.
