How to eliminate cockroaches from drains?
Drains are an important route for cockroaches; they often crawl up and down pipes, entering your home from neighbors' units through the plumbing.
Specific steps
- Use fine mesh strainers to block the overflow and drain openings of sinks and washbasins to prevent cockroaches from crawling in through sinks. Cockroaches entering through drains are primarily American cockroaches (3-4 cm, reddish-brown) — large but still able to enter through pipes.
- Check pipe joints and connections; seal any loose ones with plumber's putty or caulk.
- Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on the outer walls of pipes, cabinet bottoms, and near floor drains; cockroaches that crawl over it are poisoned.
- Once dry, the insecticide forms a film; cockroaches that crawl over it die.
- Regularly flush drains with hot water to reduce grease and food residue buildup.
Maintenance recommendations
- Replace floor drains with insect-proof types — those with flip covers or spring mechanisms work well.
- Install a P-trap under the kitchen sink drain to effectively block cockroaches.
- Pour hot water (above 60°C) down floor drains monthly to flush away food residue and eggs.
- Cover unused drain openings with caps.
- Replace worn drain seals promptly.
Why are drain cockroaches hard to eliminate?
Because drains connect the entire building, cockroaches from neighboring units can travel through the pipes. Therefore, in addition to sealing your own pipes, regular insecticide maintenance is necessary.
