How to Get Rid of Whiteflies on Plants?

What Are the Tiny White Flying Bugs on the Underside of Leaves?

Those are whiteflies, a common greenhouse and balcony pest. They're very small, with a coating of white waxy powder on their bodies and wings, making them look like tiny white insects.

What Do Whiteflies Look Like?

  • Adult: Only 1-2 mm long, white or pale yellow, with wings covered in white waxy powder. They resemble tiny white moths
  • Nymphs: Oval, flat, pale green or semi-transparent, attached to the underside of leaves and motionless
  • Eggs: Very small, oval, pale yellow, laid on the underside of leaves

Why Do They Fly Up When Disturbed?

  • Adult whiteflies are very alert and take off instantly when startled
  • But they don't fly far — they circle around and land back on the leaf underside
  • This is one way to identify whiteflies — tap a leaf and a cloud of tiny white insects flies up

Where Are Whiteflies Found?

  • Most common in greenhouses, grow rooms, and indoor balconies
  • They prefer warm (20-30°C / 68-86°F), poorly ventilated environments
  • The undersides of young leaves are their main gathering spot
  • Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, and poinsettias are especially vulnerable to whiteflies

Why Do Indoor Balconies Get Infested So Easily?

Whiteflies can breed year-round in warm environments. Indoor balconies have suitable temperatures and no natural enemies. Once introduced, they're very hard to get rid of.

Whitefly Damage

  • Direct feeding — Both adults and nymphs suck plant sap. Heavy infestations cause yellowing, wilting, and premature leaf drop
  • Honeydew and sooty mold — Like aphids, whiteflies excrete large amounts of honeydew. Leaves become sticky and black sooty mold fungi grow on them, blocking photosynthesis
  • Virus transmission — Whiteflies transmit viruses including Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, causing even greater damage than direct feeding

How to Tell Whiteflies Apart from Other Tiny White Flying Insects

Whiteflies are characterized by their tiny moth-like appearance (broad wings held roof-like over the body). When you tap a leaf, a group of tiny white insects fly up together. If you see slender, narrow-winged insects in a humid bathroom or kitchen, those are drain flies, not whiteflies.
