How to Prevent Whiteflies from Getting Indoors?
How to Prevent Whiteflies from Entering Your Home?
Once whiteflies become established on an indoor balcony, they're a real hassle to deal with. Prevention is far more important than treatment.
Quarantine New Plants
- Keep newly purchased potted plants isolated in one spot for 3-5 days and observe
- Carefully check the undersides of leaves for tiny white insects or oval nymphs
- Use a magnifying glass if possible. Whiteflies are very small and easy to miss
- Only place them near other plants once you've confirmed they're pest-free
- Also check plant cuttings or seedlings from friends
Install Window Screens
- Install fine-mesh window screens to block whiteflies from flying in from outside
- Whiteflies are tiny (1-2 mm). The mesh must be fine. Use 40 mesh or finer insect screening
- Also screen balcony vents
- In summer when windows are open for ventilation, screens are your first line of defense
Maintain Ventilation
- Whiteflies prefer warm, stagnant environments
- Don't crowd balcony plants. Maintain spacing
- Open windows frequently to lower temperature and humidity
- Well-ventilated environments discourage whitefly breeding
Regular Inspection
- Check the undersides of plant leaves once a week
- Pay special attention to newly emerged young leaves
- If you find whiteflies on any plant, isolate it immediately and spray
- Catch them early, treat them early to prevent spread to other plants
- Hang yellow sticky traps near balcony windows to detect whiteflies coming in from outside early
Hang Yellow Sticky Traps
- Place yellow sticky traps on the balcony as a monitoring tool
- Traps will catch any adult whiteflies that fly in
- They also serve as an ongoing monitoring system for whitefly intrusions
