How to eliminate mites on rats?

Mites on rats are usually gamasid mites. The key to eliminating them is to cut off their food source—rats.

Core principle: Eliminate rats first

  • Gamasid mites feed on rat blood. Without rats, they lose their food source.
  • Seal holes around the house to block potential rat entry routes.
  • Clean up food scraps; keep the kitchen clean to reduce attractiveness to rats.
  • Set traps or place rodenticides.

Simultaneous environmental treatment

While eliminating rats, treat the areas where rats travel:

  • Identify rat routes: around pipes, walls, attics, storage rooms, ceiling voids.
  • Thoroughly vacuum, especially near rat feces and nesting materials; seal and discard the vacuum bag.
  • Apply residual sprays containing deltamethrin in these areas.
  • Focus on: pipe entry points, baseboards, wall corners, storage room corners, attic entrances.
  • Gamasid mites that fall off rats and crawl around will die upon contact with the treated surface.

Continuous monitoring

  • Continue to observe for 1-2 weeks after rat elimination; mite numbers will naturally decrease as rats disappear.
  • If no one is being bitten, the mites have essentially disappeared.
  • If a few remain, reapply deltamethrin spray.
