Can gamasid mites infest pets?

Yes, gamasid mites can infest pets. Their primary hosts are rats, but if you have pets—especially cats and dogs—mites may also crawl onto them to feed.

Signs of gamasid mite infestation in pets

  • Frequent scratching, biting at certain body parts, especially the back, neck, and base of the tail.
  • Small red spots or papules on the skin, similar to flea bites.
  • Hair loss, reddened skin, dandruff.
  • In severe cases, pets may become restless, affecting sleep and appetite.

How pets become infested with gamasid mites

  1. Pets go to areas where rats frequent, indoors or outdoors—basements, storage rooms, near pipes and walls.
  2. After rats are eliminated, host-seeking mites will leave the nest and look for new hosts, and household cats and dogs become prime targets.
  3. Pets may pick up mites when running through bushes or grass during walks.

Treatment and prevention

  1. Pet deworming—consult a veterinarian for appropriate external parasiticide; do not use human pesticides.
  2. Environmental treatment—spray areas where pets stay with household hygiene insecticide containing deltamethrin: pet bedding and surroundings, sofas, carpets, door mats, etc.
  3. Rat control—mites and rats are linked; if rats are not completely eliminated, mites will reappear.
  4. Regular cleaning—wash pet bedding weekly in hot water; vacuum pet activity areas frequently.
  5. Avoid rat-active areas—check if pets frequent basements, attics, or storage rooms where rats may be present.
