Can flour mites appear on the bed?

Flour mites rarely appear on beds, but if they do, it is usually due to the following reasons:

How do flour mites get on the bed?

  1. Contaminated food stored in the bedroom — Eating snacks in bed, dropping crumbs; or storing mite-infested crackers, dried fruit, etc., in the bedroom.
  2. Spreading from the kitchen — When kitchen mite populations become very large, they can spread to adjacent rooms, including the bedroom.
  3. Carried in on clothing — Wearing clothes with food crumbs into bed.

Can flour mites survive on the bed?

Flour mites primarily feed on plant-based foods like grains, flour, and dried fruit; human skin scales are not their preferred food. So even if flour mites are on the bed, they are unlikely to multiply in large numbers. They may crawl on the sheets searching for food, but they will not settle in mattresses like dust mites. Without a food source, flour mites typically die within 1-2 weeks.

How to tell if it's flour mites or another bug?

Small white specks crawling on the bed could be flour mites or booklice. To distinguish:

  • Flour mites: Grayish-white, round, slow-moving, usually near food crumbs.
  • Booklice: Light yellow, slightly elongated, move faster, usually near damp books or cardboard.
  • Dust mites: Invisible to the naked eye and do not crawl on the bed surface.

Treatment

  1. Remove bedding and wash in hot water; tumble dry.
  2. Do not eat snacks (especially crumbly ones like crackers or chips) in the bedroom.
  3. Check the bedroom for any open snacks or dried fruit.
  4. Vacuum the mattress surface and nightstand drawers.
  5. Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth to bed frames and baseboards.
