What Foods Do Indian Meal Moths Attack?
Indian meal moth larvae are hardly picky eaters — they have one of the broadest diets of any stored-product pest. They can eat virtually any dry plant-based food.
Foods Indian Meal Moth Larvae Love
Staples:
- Rice, brown rice
- Flour, whole wheat flour
- Millet, cornmeal
- Noodles, pasta
- Oatmeal, breakfast cereal
Dried Fruit and Nuts:
- Peanuts (especially fond of high-oil varieties)
- Walnuts, almonds
- Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds
- Red dates (jujubes), dried longan
- Raisins, goji berries
- All kinds of dried fruit
Snacks and Seasonings:
- Chocolate
- Candy
- Milk powder
- Spices (chili powder, Sichuan pepper powder, etc.)
Other:
- dried herbs
- Pet food (dog food, cat food)
- Birdseed
- Dried flowers
Why Is Their Diet So Broad?
Indian meal moth larvae don't need to eat whole grain kernels — they can directly feed on powder and crumbs. Their mouthparts are suited for chewing a wide variety of dry organic materials. And their digestive system can process many types of plant-based foods, so there's almost nothing they can't eat.
What Don't Indian Meal Moths Eat?
- Fresh fruits and vegetables (too high in water content)
- Meat
- Pure synthetic fabrics (but they may chew through the packaging)
- Metal, glass, plastic (they only chew through packaging to get to food; they don't eat these materials)
What Does This Broad Diet Mean for You?
The broad diet of Indian meal moths means:
- Any opened dry good in the kitchen can be infested
- Once you have them, their spread range is large
- During cleanup, every single food item needs to be checked
- Sealing only the rice isn't enough — ALL food must be sealed
Inspection Checklist
If you find Indian meal moths in your kitchen, don't skip any of these:
Rice, flour, noodles, millet, cornmeal, oatmeal, peanuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts, red dates, dried longan, raisins, chocolate, milk powder, dog food, dried herbs. Check every single one. Throw away anything with silk webbing. Seal anything that's still clean.
